J’éclaire folgt dem historischen Motiv einer 1798 entstandenen Karikatur, den französischen Schriftsteller und Philosophen Voltaire zeigend, dessen leuchtende Quelle in Form einer fackelnden Laterne in einen ungewissen Raum hineinstrahlt - ein Dunkel, welches sich als Kontrast zum erleuchtenden Bild der Aufklärung erweist. In diesem Kontext ist die dargestellte Figur nicht nur als ein „Erleuchtender“ sondern auch als ein Wegweisender zu verstehen. Gleichzeitig ist sie übertragbar auf den Philosophen Immanuel Kant, ein weiterer wichtiger Vertreter der Aufklärung, dessen Tod sich 2024 zum 300. Mal jährt.

“J’éclaire” follows the inverted historical motif of a caricature created in 1798, showing the French writer and philosopher Voltaire, whose luminous source in the form of a torchlight lantern shines into an uncertain space - a darkness that proves to be a contrast to the illuminating image of the Enlightenment. In this context, the figure depicted is to be understood not only as an “illuminator” but also as a guide. At the same time, it can be transferred to the philosopher and important figure of Enlightenment, Immanuel Kant, whose 300th anniversary of his death will be in 2024.
