Leonie Harder Dutch, b. 1972
Born in Rotterdam, Holland
Studied Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and at Kingston University in London, England as well as at Staatlichen Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main, Prof. Thomas Bayrle.
Leonie Harder lives and works as an artist in Hamburg, Germany.
Leonie Harders work is concerned with questions about perspective, point of view, simultaneity and synchronicity, time and space, opposing or superimposed perspectives of worlds, or views onto one another.
She also deals with topics around linearity and nonlinearity, mental mapping of memory, how photographic and film material, especially super 8, influences the way in which we store our personal history, both in terms of our memory and in terms of storing it in books and boxes etc.
Leonie investigates the boundaries of the films principle of working, its materiality and dimensionality. The idea of captured bits of time and space on film material. Focusing, deciding, highlighting certain aspects, by putting them in the picture thus neglecting what is outside the frame. Let it be left, right, above, below or behind the camera. Where is our position in relation to the world. Where do we look? From which angle, from which point of view, what perspective? And what do we miss out, neglect, by not capturing it on material. How does that influence our memory and perception of the world.
Leonie invents systems like charts, diagrams, maps. These constructions function as frameworks, as manuals that guide through the process of the work. Leonie mainly uses conventional lensbased media, like film, photography and video as source material. To realize her projects she takes the work through different processes. She works with high and low technology, with optical enlargements from super 8 to 35mm, microfiche film, medium format film, digital camera, computer, analog or digital printing processes. Whatever the work requires. By transforming the source into her idea the work takes shape.
