Rolf Sachs Swiss/German, b. 1955

Overview

As an artist, my work and life are particularly interested in the human psyche, their character, relationships, soul, and spirit. I strongly believe that our existence and character traits are due to chance, to where we were born and into what family, to how our parents’ genes aligned, and even to the lasting influence of former generations. In light of this, we should be tolerant and respectful towards each other.

Personally, I try to sow harmony, openness, and a lightness of being around me as I believe it is crucial to reach ultimate freedom of mind. This potential “togetherness” is multi-faceted and complex, touching upon empathy, tolerance, belief, humour, love, respect, positive thinking, and many more.

I hope that these attributes are somewhat reflected in my work and can inspire souls to reach the same.

Leben und leben lassen!

Rolf Sachs combines different styles - from minimalism to surrealism - in his diverse work of sculpture, installation, photography, painting, scenography and design. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1955, the artist is fascinated by everyday objects, to which he lends a playful and emotional dimension in his works. He emphasises the beauty of simplicity and at the same time often questions its supposed or suggested use and intention.
Sachs has been experimenting with the medium of light since the 1990s, creating works that use neon tubes and other light sources to transform spaces and objects. His light artworks are often characterised by their ephemeral and time-bound qualities, casting delicate shadows and glowing softly, evoking a sense of intimacy and contemplation.
Rolf Sachs often deals with themes such as nostalgia, identity and the passing of time. His works convey a sense of curiosity and wonder, inviting viewers to engage with their environment in new and unexpected ways. Sachs' work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Cologne and the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. Since 2018 he lives and works in Rome, Italy.
