In the human being are fire, air, water, and earth—and from them he is made. From fire he has warmth, from air his breath, from water his blood, and from earth his body. To fire he owes sight, to air hearing, to water movement, and to earth his gait.
— Hildegard von Bingen
With WASSER, Galerie Watson inaugurates a new exhibition series dedicated to the four elements. The point of departure is the idea that fire, water, earth and air have, for centuries, served as fundamental principles for ordering the world and for understanding the relationship between humans and nature. The series approaches these elements as a shared language of perception, materiality and artistic experience.
Water is origin, boundary, force. Many of the works engage directly with the element while simultaneously leaving space for projection, memory and individual interpretation; water resists any singular or fixed definition.
Light art deliberately enters into dialogue with other media — painting, installation, sound and movement — opening up an interdisciplinary field in which an element is examined that constantly surrounds us and yet remains difficult to grasp.
The selected positions — ranging from established artists to younger voices — each develop their own artistic language, revealing the many ways in which water can unfold through form, material and perception.
