Annette Sauermann Germany, b. 1957

Biography

Annette Sauermann (*1957, Essen, Germany) is a German artist working at the intersection of sculpture, architecture, and light. For more than three decades, her practice has been centered on a rigorous exploration of light as a material - approached not symbolically, but as a physically perceptible and spatial phenomenon.

Sauermann’s work spans sculptures, reliefs, and works on paper. Early in her career, she engaged intensively with paper as a medium - particularly in the context of international paper art exhibitions - where she developed spatial and light-sensitive constructions that already pointed toward her later sculptural practice. Her ongoing work translates this sensitivity into more architectural forms, combining materials such as concrete, glass, and Plexiglas into precisely constructed bodies that refract, channel, and transform light.

A defining characteristic of her work is the tension between material presence and immaterial effect. Massive, geometric structures interact with light as a dynamic, unstable element: depending on the angle of light, time of day, and the viewer’s position, the works continuously shift in appearance. Rather than fixed objects, they operate as perceptual situations - fields of light that unfold in real time.

Sauermann has exhibited widely across Europe, the United States, and Asia, including presentations at institutions such as the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, the Ludwig Forum Aachen, and the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum, as well as international venues in such as New York City and Tokyo.

In addition to her exhibition practice, Sauermann has realized numerous public commissions and site-specific installations, including large-scale light works in architectural contexts. A notable example is her permanent installation Changing Lights at the University Hospital Cologne, where light becomes an integral component of the built environment.

Her works are held in both private and institutional collections and have been presented in the context of major light art exhibitions, including museum shows such as Glanzstücke at the Museum Ritter

Rooted in the tradition of Concrete Art, Sauermann expands its formal precision through a perceptual and experiential dimension. Her works challenge not only vision, but the viewer’s physical presence in space - turning perception into an active, embodied process.
